Tales from the Broker's Broker

Don't Confuse Trendy with Timeless

There’s a difference between something that catches your eye and something that holds it.

It’s a truth I come back to often in both real estate and personal style: trend gets the attention, but timeless earns the trust. And in a world that’s always chasing the next new thing—color of the year, must-have backsplash, this week’s “it” chair—it’s easy to mistake the loudest look for the best one. But here’s the thing: timelessness isn’t boring. It’s not beige or blank. It’s not a lack of creativity. In fact, the most enduring spaces and styles are often the most thoughtful. They’re built not on impulse but on intention.

The Test of Time
Ask yourself: will this still feel right in five years? Ten? Will it still function? Still delight?

Whether you’re choosing a new sofa or scouting your next home, that’s the question that matters most. Because trendy asks: “What’s hot right now?” Timeless asks: “What makes me feel at home?” That’s the difference between a glossy design moment and a lived-in masterpiece.

When Trends Work—and When They Don’t
Let’s be clear: I’m not anti-trend. A pop of the current can be invigorating—a curved lamp here, a marbled tray there. But trends should accessorize, not anchor. They’re the paint, not the architecture.

I’ve walked into plenty of listings where the design leaned too heavily on the trend of the moment: overly minimalist kitchens, arched everything, gray-on-gray palettes that felt more algorithm than emotion. And while they may have photographed well for the listing, they rarely sparked love at first sight in person. Why? Because they lacked soul. They lacked a sense of continuity.

What Timeless Really Means
Timeless doesn’t mean traditional. It means attuned. It means choosing materials, colors, and proportions that feel inevitable—like they were always meant to be there. It means editing thoughtfully. Curating with care. Trusting your own instincts instead of the algorithm.

Think: natural woods, patinated metals, textiles that age gracefully. Think: spaces designed around light, comfort, movement. Think: choices that reflect you, not your Pinterest board.

The Broker’s Perspective
I always encourage clients—whether buyers or sellers—to think in layers. What will grow with you? What will still make sense if your lifestyle changes? What will feel just as good on a rainy Tuesday as it does in an Instagram reel? The best homes aren’t trendsetters. They’re time-holders. They carry the weight of memory, the glow of meaning. And that’s what people respond to when they walk in the door.

Happily Ever Always™, Not Just for the Moment
In both real estate and life, the best choices are the ones that don’t need rethinking every season. They don’t shout for attention—they hold it. They don’t demand admiration—they earn affection.

So yes, be inspired by the moment. But root your choices in what lasts. Because true luxury isn’t about being “on trend”—it’s about being at peace with your space, your style, and yourself.

What This All Reminds Me
The most beautiful things in life don’t rush to be noticed. They simply endure—and in doing so, become unforgettable.
